Network Rail Framework
We were appointed as the first-ranked contractor to the North West and Central Network Rail Framework following a successful tender in 2020. The framework covered a significant section of the UK rail network, including the West Coast Mainline, and involved complex demolition and asbestos removal works delivered across operational rail assets nationwide.
Works were carried out across both trackside and non-trackside rail properties, many of which remained live throughout delivery. Locations included stations, operational buildings, generator rooms and lineside assets, all requiring strict control measures and close coordination with Network Rail’s project teams.
Erith undertook demolition and asbestos removal works across a wide range of rail assets, including the removal of redundant structures such as shelters, track section cabins, outbuildings, storage units and commercial offices. The scope also included dismantling and removal of decommissioned heavy equipment from generator rooms and the demolition of a redundant REB building at Leamington Spa, where the floor slab was retained and new duct covers were installed.
Live Rail Constraints and Site Controls
Delivery took place within rail environments where access was restricted and rail infrastructure remained operational. All works were undertaken by PTS card-holding operatives, with activities carried out during daytime and night-time possessions to maintain programme certainty and reduced disruption.
At Leamington Spa, the trackside location required comprehensive inductions, detailed risk management meetings and strict adherence to Network Rail’s Life Saving Rules. Protection of existing infrastructure was achieved through the use of chipboard and rubber tyres, with all areas checked for live services before demolition works commenced.
Asbestos Removal and Lineside Asset Works
Erith carried out pre-demolition asbestos removal under controlled conditions, including the removal of floor tiles, bitumen adhesive and insulating board packers. Further works included the removal and disposal of over 2,500 metres of lineside asbestos cement troughing, enabling the installation of new power and signalling cables.
Additional asbestos removal works were completed at Atherton Station, including the removal of asbestos insulating board from internal ceilings and the removal of external asbestos cement collars surrounding high-voltage cables.
Erith delivered technically challenging demolition and asbestos removal works across the network Rail Framework, enabling safe removal of hazardous materials and supporting the installation of new power and signalling infrastructure across operational rail environments.
Completion of works across the framework reinforced Erith’s capability to operate safely within live rail settings while maintaining compliance, programme control and protection of critical rail assets.
