We were appointed to undertake the urgent removal and replacement of 13 life-expired pit blocks at Blackhorse Road Underground Station. The existing pit blocks contained asbestos contaminated packing and washers, requiring licensed asbestos removal works to be delivered under fully controlled conditions within a live operational Underground environment.

Works were carried out during planned engineering shifts, with activities carefully programmed to suit limited access windows and operational constraints. Under controlled asbestos conditions, each pit block and its anchor were broken out and removed, with contaminated materials safely contained, removed and disposed of in full compliance with regulatory and London Underground requirements.

Permanent new timber pit blocks were installed and secured using rapid set concrete to meet track standard requirements. To facilitate the works, the running rail was lifted during each shift to allow safe access, before being reinstated to its original lateral and vertical alignment.

Live Rail and Track Assurance

Given the live railway environment, precise coordination and assurance were critical to delivery. Following installation, the running rails were realigned and checked at the end of each shift to confirm the track was fit for traffic and compliant with operational standards. All works were completed safely, to programme and without incident.

On completion, a formal inspection and walk-through was undertaken, after which the works were successfully signed off by Transport for London and handed back to the maintainer for continued operation.
