Royal Mail Group is one of the nation’s most recognisable brands, operating across Britain for over 500 years. With a national infrastructure and asset profile, they ensure timely delivery of letters, parcels, and billions of items to over 30 million addresses.

 

Following a tender award, we were appointed as one of four asbestos removal contractors for the asbestos removals framework, which mobilised in December 2021. We were allocated the North region, requiring 365, 24/7 coverage across all of Scotland, including the outer islands, Northern Ireland, and parts of North East and North West England, covering over 380 sites. These properties include delivery offices, mail centres, hubs, local depots, offices, industrial units, and retail units.

After a comprehensive contract-specific induction, mobilisation, and training period, we were paired with Tetra Tech, one of RMG’s appointed asbestos consultants. We were designated as the Principal Contractor and Tetra Tech as the Principal Designer. Together, we work collaboratively in planning works and proactively resolving issues, escalating and presenting to RMG for approval to avoid project delays, improve safe working, and minimise costs.

 

Significant challenges include non-negotiable client-led access times for each property, remote locations and islands requiring logistical solutions, and working in highly sensitive areas requiring security access and a permit to work system. Works are ideally planned for nighttime to reduce interaction and disruption to building users, given the high levels of footfall and continuous flow of people.

Through a contract-specific execution plan covering a dedicated delivery team, agreed communication, and quality and safety standards, we provide a 365, 24/7 service, including emergency and reactive support as RMG’s technical expert.

 

We attend regular continuous improvement workshops with all stakeholders within the national framework, sharing best practices and innovative working solutions, in addition to delivering works against demanding client KPIs and SLAs.
