Silvertown Tunnel
Riverlinx CJV is a joint venture, a partnership bringing together international, market leading expertise from three civil engineering and construction companies: BAM Nuttall, Ferrovial Construction and SK ecoplant.
This new 1.4km twin-bore road tunnel under the Thames will be the first in London in over 30 years. A modern tunnel combined with a user charge and improved cross-river public transport will improve the reliability and resilience of the wider road network.
When it opens in 2025 the Silvertown Tunnel will:
- Effectively eliminate delays and queues at the Blackwall Tunnel, with journey times up to 20 minutes faster
- Reduce the environmental impact of traffic congestion on some of London’s most polluted roads
- Provide more opportunities to cross the river by public transport with a network of zero-emission buses offering new routes and better access to more destinations
We were appointed in 2020 (to present) by Riverlinx CJV to manage, deliver and dispose of all of the roll on roll off bins and skip waste from both operational sites of the Silvertown tunnel (Greenwich and Silvertown).
To aid in waste management and segregation, clearly labelled (with corresponding EWC codes) skips and roll on roll off bins were placed on site ranging from 4 yard skips to 40 yard sealed containers.
Waste streams on site included:
- Wood (EWC 17 02 01)
- Vegetation and Tree Stumps (EWC 20 02 01)
- Paper (EWC 20 01 01)
- Plant Tracks and Tyres (EWC 16 01 03)
- Plastic (EWC 17 02 03)
- Construction and demolition waste (EWC 17 09 04)
- WEEE waste (EWC 20 01 36)

Challenges
Vehicle congestion was minimised by utilising Erith’s web-based satellite system along with Riverlinx’s booking portal both of which were managed by our operational team.
To date Erith have managed to divert 100% of the waste from landfill by employing the waste hierarchy pyramid.
