Location

Beckton

We were employed by National Grid Property Holdings to manage the disposal requirements at Beckton Gasholder. The former gas works site contained 14,054m³ of illegally fly-tipped household waste. Located on a busy highway and surrounded by residential premises near a partially operational gasworks in Beckton, East London, the works were conducted over a 12-week period. This involved the excavation, processing, and off-site disposal of fly-tipped and unsuitable material.

Our methodology included the excavation, processing, and material movement via road using the following equipment:

  • D6 Blade
  • 2 x 25 Tonne Excavators
  • 2 x 25 Tonne Dumpers
  • 1 x Road Sweeper

Challenges

Due to the hazardous waste identified within the fly-tipped material, we implemented a strategic environmental monitoring programme using EVM 7 real-time dust, vapour, and gas monitoring equipment. All material removed off-site was handled by our in-house FORS Gold accredited transport fleet. At peak, we were removing £1M worth of waste per week for the first four weeks of the project.
